There are some men who are born, live their lives, and die unnoticed by the world; Dr. Martin Luther King was not one of them. He was a man who not only changed his society, his community, and his culture, but changed the future as well. He was passionate about religion, he was an advocate, and mentor for Blacks, poverty, and where an inhuman injustice was taking place. He dreamed of whites and Blacks joining together in harmony, and a world where Blacks would one day be judged by their character instead of by their skin color. He also dreamed that one day segregation would end completely. He is, and was, a great mentor for all people, not just people of color. If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, would he view our society with pride? The answer is yes, but he would also be disheartened by some of the issues facing America today. As a whole, Dr. King would be pleased with our sociological and demographic advancement; however, it is reasonable to suggest that he would be up in arms about the avocation of segregation and racism returning to the schools and the way the poverty stricken people in society are treated. People who live in low income areas need that education to let them know they can rise above it. Not, 'If I stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to my job?' Not, 'If I stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to all the hours that I usually spend in my office everyday and every week as a pastor?' The question is, 'If I do not stop and help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?' That's the question" (I've Been to the Mountaintop, 1968)This is the question America needs to face about our poverty stricken areas. There are people of color who now hold such positions as presidents and vice-presidents of companies, mailmen, policemen, lawyers, and many other high ranking jobs that were not available to them back in the 1960's. People of color also hold such positions as principals of schools, superintendents, administrators, etc. King would be very distraught that America keeps the poorer population poor, and helps the richer population get richer. King would have been disturbed by it as well. Furthermore, people are marrying outside their own race; marriages today consist of mixed races such as Blacks, Caucasian, Indians, Chicanos, Oriental, and Hispanics, and other races. It usually ends up benefiting the children because they will usually get a better education from such a move. would be an advocate for people living in unsafe conditions if he were alive today. These men and women are setting examples for others to follow in their footsteps, which makes the door of opportunity open a little easier for the people of tomorrow. net, I found that the population is starting to segregate itself; therefore, making the schools segregated once again after the long hard struggle to desegregate them.
