Did Hollywood portray the mental illness
Hollywood portrayed the mental illness, autism in the movie Rain Man very well. Autistic disorder is sometimes referred to as early infantile autism, childhood autism, or Kanner's autism. Some of the features are eye-to-eye gaze, facial expressions, body postures, and gestures. Some people whom develop autism at a very young age may have a very small interest or none at all, for making friends. People with this illness are very independent people, they have very demanding opinions and they like to do things on a regular schedule. There is impairment in communications with these patients. They like solitary activities; some individuals may be oblivious to others. Some individuals may not learn to speak but in some cases they may not be ready to learn how to speak at that time but may agree to learn at a later time. Most people with autism tend to stutter a lot and cannot carry on a normal conversation with others. Patients tend to repeat things such as jingles or riddles. In the movie Rain Man, the character Raymond liked to repeat the "first base riddle" when he would get nervous or anxious. Patients with autism normally have to have things the way they are used to them being. Such as in the movie, Raymond had to have his bed
Walking on their tiptoes, odd hand movements or body posture too. Individuals with autism may have a range of behavioral symptoms, such as hyperactivity, short attention spans, impulsivity, aggressiveness, self-injurious behaviors and particularly in young children, temper tantrums, but can occur in any age. They may recite dates, words to a song that was heard years ago, statistics or other irrelevant information. He cannot get out the door because the chain lock is hooked and he cannot unhook it. Some of the movements that people have stereotyped in autistic people are clapping and finger flicking. Raymond hears this noise and then begins to run out the door to escape the noise from the smoke alarm. So Raymond goes back to the refrigerator and gets out an apple juice box and forgets about the toaster oven being on. He turns on the toaster oven and tries to open the toaster oven door but it is jammed and would not come open. Individuals with autism do not normally like for people to touch them or show affection involving touching them, such as hugs. In infants, the failure to cuddle may be present, also directed smiles or eye contact. Abnormal posture is stereotypical also. Raymond decides he wants to cook some pancakes without Charlie's help. In conclusion to the mental illness autism in the movie Rain Man, I do think that Hollywood did a great job portraying autism through the situation of the movie and the actors. Also some whole body movements such as rocking, dipping and swaying. Females that have autism are more likely to show more severe signs of Mental Retardation than males would.
