Gangsta rap of today is not what it once was. Likewise the person behind the mike is not who he once was. Now there are rapper's that portray an image rather than have a message. The beat and the image overshadow the words that are coming from the artist. Gangsta rap is now simply another style of presenting lyrics. Back in the day when you listen to Tupac, you could tell that he was rapping about things going on in his community. He rapped about it because that was reality for him at that time. An up and coming rapper wants people to know that they have had to struggle. At the top of the list is street credibility. The streets are still rough and they can handle anything the streets can throw at them. To day we call them rappers but in reality they don't spend much of their time rapping. Rappers also no longer live in the hood, they very seldom visit the hook however in the video that is the first thing you see. When you think of past artist with a lot of street credibility you think of NWA, Tupac, and Biggie mainly. Rappers today market shoes, have clothing lines, do commercials etc. Now according to his music he doing big thangs in the streets in the drug game. The streets are not what they once were. Pastor Troy is a well known Gangsta rapper from Georgia (shout out to home team) and he actually went to college at first. Events that were organized for the young people to see and hear something other than gunshots on a daily bases.
