Tony blair
he idea of a British Presidency is an exaggeration. Discuss. This essay is not simply about Britain turning into a second America, it is not just about a changing culture, it looks into how Tony Blair since winning the 1997 General Election has employed tactics and strategies of various American presidents. This essay will also look into how British politics has changed, with it now being more image conscious and less about the actual substance of politics, the issues and policies. In this essay I will also show that Blair has tried to detach himself as much from his own party and also from his cabinet and parliament, he is not only acting like a president but he has tried to take on the powers of a president as he has felt there is an advantage of having a presidential stance. But I will also explain that this term of 'British Presidency' should not be taken too far, even if Blair wanted to be a British President he faces such problems such as a completely different constitution, which I will go into more deeply later in the essay, and also how various people in politics only call Tony Blair a British President as a derogatory term. But to begin with I think it is important to show what the differences there are between
When we are talking about the term 'presidential' what normally is associated with this is the centralisation of the executive and personal power, and there is evidence of this with Blair. The president also gets to nominates judges to fill up vacancies on the Supreme Court. This links us to the next example of a growing trend of a British Presidency in Tony Blair; image. a British Prime Minister and the American President. All this could be due to the increasing Americanisation of the media. Blair has also showed his concerns with the way he is viewed by the public by the amount of focus groups and opinion polling that he has used to work out what policy positions to take and to see what the current public attitudes are. So according to the constitution there are no possible comparisons and in fact it is just a derogatory term used for Tony Blair. The PM can also make appointments beyond the ministers such as civil servents, ambassadors and bishops. The PM also has the power to terminate a parliament or government, for example the time when he calls an election. He then has a number of options, but most likely is that he will sign the bill into law. Another power is that he can nominate executive branch officials of the federal government, but it does have to be confirmed by senate by a simple majority vote. A fifth power of the president is that he is the chief executive. There was also a relationship between the two leaders, New Labour strategists such as Philip Gould went to America to advise Clinton's team for his election campaign and vice versa with Democratic consultants such as James Carville making various contributions to the New Labour Campaign. Other powers are that he gets to creates peers to sit in the House of Lords.
