A Good Man Is Hard To Find

             In the story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," the grandmother answers this question of heaven or earthly paradise. She would choose her earthly paradise over what most people would consider true paradise. I am not certain the grandmother is as religious as she may act or claim. In this moment I believe I would agree with the grandmother. I too would rather stay here to enjoy what I consider my earthly paradise. This may be because I don't fully understand what is being offered in the life after death. I think I would like to be here long enough to experience what I consider some of the most important things in life. Things like sharing in true love with woman, giving love and direction to my future children, and being the best friend I can to the people I care about. However, I don't think my decision is as selfish as the grandmothers. I think she just wants as much time as possible here on earth to satisfy her own desires. Unlike me, she doesn't seem to care about anyone else's wants or needs.
             In this story, the grandmother is a very selfish woman. I use the word woman because she was certainly not a lady. Try as she may to convince everyone, I don't believe anyone is fooled by her show. She has no respect for any of her family members. Nor do they have any respect for her. This is obvious by the discussion held in the opening paragraphs of this story. The grandmother stood in front of Bailey shaking the newspaper at his bald head trying to get him to read an article about a fellow that had escaped from the federal pen. Then John Wesley shows his disrespect by saying, "If you don't want to go to Florida, why dontcha stay at home?" This invites June Star to add her two cents to the conversation. "She wouldn't stay at home to be queen for a day. She wouldn't stay home for a million bucks. Afraid she'd miss something." This
