Comparison of The Plague to the Nazi invasion of France duri
The Plague, by Albert Camus is a story of the plague epidemic in the Algerian city of Oran. One by one, thousands of rats come out from their underground homes and idle in the streets. At first the people dismiss the rats, but after the problem gets so bad that the carcasses have to be burned, people begin to worry. However, their worries come too late because the people have already begun to die because of the plague. These fictional events in Oran correspond with the real events in France during World War II. In 1939, the French and other allied forces were fighting a brutal campaign to keep the Nazis out of their countries. The French were not ever expecting to be taken over by the Germans however on June 25, 1939 France signed an armistice giving Nazi Germany full control of France. According to Discovering Biography,But, to Camus, the plague itself served also as a metaphor for "Fascism, the Nazi era, [and] the occupation of France," wrote Lottman. Irene Finel- Honigman similarly called the story an allegory "of the concentration camps and the prisoners of war camps. Oran in this interpretation transcends its definition as a city and becomes a microcosm of a war- torn state.Also, according to Discovering Authors,
] they disbelieved in pestilence" (Camus 37). The people of Oran have in the past gone about their lives in a haze never feeling real emotions until now. The aftermath of the war was great. ] his temperature was 103, the ganglia of his neck and limbs were swollen" (Camus 21). They were dying and no one could explain or prevent it from happening. During World War II, Adolf Hitler and his Nazis were on a brutal campaign to capture the world. The bodies were buried in a mass grave on the farm property (1). Everyday another person developed the same symptoms as Dr. The plague left the town of Oran ravaged and left hundreds dead. ] through scientific means (Discovering Authors). The only real question is: why did the plague strike that town of Oran? There were two different philosophies are religion and science.
