Nominal Group Technique

The purpose of this paper is to define and discuss the decision-making and problem solving technique called the Nominal Group Technique (NGT). It's a deviation from the typical form of brainstorming. Brainstorming is the act of defining a problem or idea and coming up anything related to the topic - no matter how remote a suggestion may sound. All of these ideas are recorded and evaluated only after the brainstorming is completed.Originally developed as an organizational planning technique by Delbecq, Van de Ven and Gustafson in 1971, the nominal group technique is a consensus-planning tool that helps prioritize issues."Although there are some variations of the nominal group technique, there is a basic form. Nominal group technique uses a highly structured group meeting that asks group members to respond to a question in writing. Responses are gathered one at a time from participants and written on a flipchart. This is repeated until all responses have been gathered. Time is allowed for all responses to be clarified.
