What were the causes of the Russian Revolution in March 1917
In March 1917 Russia was an autocracy, a political system favouring unlimited authority by a single individual. It was the crucial events that took place during this period of history that would change many people's lives. It was the uniting of the peasants, workers, and middle class with the Tsar's own army and the many other long-term reasons such as the lack of real change after 1905 revolutions. It was inevitable that Russia was to go the way it did. There are many short and long term reasons for the revolution in March 1917, which we will examine.One of the long-term causes of the revolution in 1917 was that there were poor conditions for the workers in the towns because the peasants who worked in the factories mainly came in the winter. This was because it was the time of the year when it was hard for them to make money out of their land. This meant there was no permanent housing made for them and they mainly slept in the street. Foreigners started most of the industry this was because the Tsar sent letters to people in Britain asking them to invest money in the factories, and this is exactly what they did. After the October1905 revolution the Tsar made a few promises which all sound so good to the people of Russia, however the Tsar still had his ways of controlling them. The Tsar in fact only made things worse for himself. The Tsar promised that there would be a duma elected by the people, civil rights, uncensored newspapers and political parties, which were able to speak in public and in some ways "promote" themselves, however in practice this was not democratic. The peasants, who made up 75% of the population, had no chance of land ownership. On returning to inspect the body, Rasputin suddenly regained consciousness and started to strangle Yusupov, who was completely scared out of his wits. The Tsar had to deal with things such as ammunition, which had been used from the war, and so workers had to work for longer with less pay because all extra money was needed for the war. The Tsar was the icon, which was normally a picture of a saint but changed to the Tsar so that the peasants prayed to this and it was almost as if he was the saint and used to brainwash. Yusupovsky then shot the monk at point blank range and Rasputin collapsed on the floor. So much so that the nickname for the hangman's noose was Stolypin's necktie. Women would squabble in the queues and cause arguments. When Rasputin's body was found, his bonds were broken and his lungs were filled with water, showing that he didn't actually die until he was submerged in the frozen waters scrapping the ice to reach the ground and save his life. There are many reasons for the revolution to take place in March 1917, these are surprisingly just a few of them.
