I Am Joaquin
The poem "I Am Joaquin," written by Rodolfo Gonzales is about our Hispanic and Indian culture, Mexican heroes, and American lives. In the poem, Joaquin express many different emotions that he had felt about his world. Overall, I believe that Joaquin was angry of how society was towards his culture, the fact that now he must choose between economic and his cultural identity and where we were and now are. To begin with, Joaquin feels that he does not belong in this world for the way he is treated. In the poem, Joaquin said that by the rules, attitudes, manipulation and modern society he feel
Joaquin mention that part of him gives up his brother, forgets his parents, and become part of the melting pot for leadership is given in society's name. The Treaty of Hidalgo was broken and so were the promises. He is looked down upon and made to feel worthless by the people's behavior toward him. Our wealth can not be seemed it is in our spirits, poor in valuable thing yet rich in Raza. He would have to sell out his roots, his culture to get ahead. Joaquin said in the poem that the foreign people frowned on the way of his ancestors living yet plagiarized the skills and ingenuity from them. Also, society restrains him by their influences. To win the battles Joaquin will need to become part of the melting pot and loss his identity. In the end, being equal is what matter the most, it stop the feeling of not belonging, having to make difficult choices, and not the same opportunity. Joaquin does not know equality this society will not give him this. Joaquin would not have felt so much angry if we are all equal. However, unfair it is to have to choose between having a full stomach and starve led, the main thing that Joaquin feels angry about is where we were and now are for not having the same opportunity.
