Is it Wrong to Abort a Pregnancy?
Always? Sometimes? Never? In the upcoming 2004 presidential election there are many heated issues being discussed but none are nearly as important as abortion. President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry have two very different stances on the controversial topic of abortion. Because of the history of abortion in the United States, along with Bush's conservative views, Kerry's liberal views, and the addition of new supreme court judges, abortion will definitely be a topic debated in the upcoming election. Although there is some common ground, Bush considers abortion to be murder, while Kerry considers abortion a right. Both Bush and Kerry are of catholic religion. Some often question why Kerry supports the view of pro-choice since he is of catholic religion and abortion is considered wrong in catholic faith. The Bush and Kerry abortion views bring us to the division of church and state. In December of 1972, supreme court case Roe vs. Wade challenged the criminal abortion laws of Texas. Texas laws forbade abortion except in cases where a woman's life was in danger. The court decided in favor of Roe. They felt a woman's right to abortion falls within the right to privacy protected by
Pro choice supporters argue that abortion is a right. Pro choice supporters believe strongly that abortion is a right given to the mother. ( The constitution contains no right to abortion. Those who believe a woman has no right to have an abortion is condemning her and her husband to parenthood as a duty and not as a chosen value(Lewis,1). Both John Kerry and President George W. Brain waves start six weeks after conception. Seventy- eight percent of abortions occur after fetal brain waves have formed (Dean, Slide 5). While Bush believes strongly that abortion is morally wrong, he also believes that abortion is ok in cases of rape, incest and when the life of the mother is in danger. The catholic faith believes that a baby is a gift from god, and to kill a gift from god should be punishable by god as well as law. John Kerry supports abortion all around, which would also include him supporting abortion in cases of rape, incest, and endangerment of the mother. Pro life supporters believe strongly that abortion is morally wrong and killing the unborn should be considered a crime. Bush supports abortion in the three cases listed above which are in fact rare.
