A Good Man is Hard to Find

             When reading Flannery O'Connor's, "A Good Man is Hard to Find", one might not think that she is making a religious point due to the shocking violence against ordinary men, women, and children. Her interest in religion as a writer deals with how a person learns from the lessons of life. One of O'Connor's most famous religious commentary is "A Good Man is Hard to Find." This short story commences as a simple family drama, with a deceitful and self-centered grandmother who causes the death of the whole family. Through the changes that occur in the grandmother's character, O'Connor reveals her unorthodox religious views.
             What is revealed is the Grandmother's change in character from a superficial woman who thinks she is a good Christian in the beginning to actually being a good Christian in the end of the story. From first reading the story, the reader may mistakenly view the grandmother as a good caring person. The grandmother thinks it's important to be portrayed as a good lady, even in her death. The grandmother believes that one should be dressed in a manner in which she were to be found dead on the highway, they would characterize her as a lady. It is important for the grandmother to dress well because that was how southern ladies were taught. The grandmother is portrayed as a conventional Southern woman. In the beginning, the grandmother truly believes that she is a good Christian lady because she goes to church consistently and prays. However, she does not act like a good Christian. For example, a good Christian is not self-centered, in fact, good Christians show traits of being compassionate and willingness to help others out of a good heart. In contrast, the grandmother is selfish and watches out for herself. The first line of the story, "The grandmother didn't want to go to Florida", suggests that she is selfish.
