Bias in the Media
News broadcasters have a basic job , that of supplying their viewers with the facts. With this occupation news anchors and reporters can remain seen as human beings, humans with feelings and opinions. However, their job is not to reveal these to the public. Viewers should be able to feel confident that a program will be sharing factual information on subjects and then they will be able to form their own opinions and judgments. Unfortunately with many of today's newsmakers this ideal can not always be made possible. The number of democratic party members is very high in journalism. In fact in a 1996 survey, as reported in a book titled Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News by Bernard Goldberg, a considerable eighty nine percent of journalists voted for Bill Clinton in the presidential election compared to only a forty-three percent vote from the general American population. In particular primary news sources, CNN, CBS, NBC and ABC have long been viewed my many people as possessing and distributing a liberal tone (1). Many viewers are easily swayed to more liberal ways of thinking due to the structure of the reporting by these newscast stations. Many viewers however can realize that the women and m
After all journalists are people too. Following an interview with Marian Carr Knox, the secretary of Bush's late squadron commander, information arose that should have ceased Rather's defense. en of television are political partisans. Not only had Dan Rather been documented for over twenty years as being pro-democratic but he also illustrates a definite "Anti-Bush" stand. If the case just was that Dan Rather and CBS did just have a glitch in their research skills and honestly thought that they were doing their duty to report what American's needed to hear it still was a grave mistake and wrongdoing. The CBS parent company Viacom itself has even given over seventy-five percent of it's one million dollar contribution to the 2004 campaign to the Democratic party. He finally conceded that the documents were a forgery yet with the input of Knox, he stated that even so, the papers are believed to be the thoughts of Lt. After much evidence surfaced that delegitamized the validity of the paper, Rather was forced to acknowledge that there was serious questions concerning the authenticity of the documents. The font used in the typing was not available at the alleged date of recording and the Lieutenant refers to an incident that happened over a year before the date issued to the forged document. Further investigation of the writing on government stationary revealed more obvious evidence to it's fraudulency. Rather used slander and was consistently rude to George. No it's not coincidence and yes it not surprisingly is still in line with the rest of the CBS and Rather brand of news. During the 1988 interview or "interrogation" of President Bush Rather persistently asked the question of Bush's involvement with Iran-contra when the interview was supposed to simply be a political profile. Is it coincidence that this report occurred so soon after the President jumped further ahead of his opponent senator John Kerry in the polls and just two months before the Presidential election? Could it be in conjunction with CBS's downgrading of the attacks on Kerry's military record, the over emphasis on Palestinian suffering and none what so ever of Israel, America's ally, or all the other coverage that subtlety bashes the Bush administration.
