Theme analysis

The short storied "Boys and Girls" by Alice Munro and "Mercy Among the Children" by David Adams Richards are rich with dramatic themes. In "Mercy Among the Children" Richards conveys such themes as pride versus morals, discrimination and the consequences of being passive. Munro conveys themes such as growing up, gender issues and maturing in the short In the story "Mercy Among the Children" pride versus moral is conveyed by Sydney telling Lyle that fighting is bad. "So I knew first hand that what my father had said was right - that every injury done to someone is done again to the perpetrator of that injury."(Richards. 3). But Lyle is put in a predicament where he must fight. So he beats up Griffin because up Griffin because he beats up him and his sister.


In "Boys and Girls" it talks about growing up and maturing. She tries not to let peoples actions bother her. In "Mercy Among the Children" they are very poor. This results in her becoming more feminine and wanting ot be inside with her mom instead of outside with her father on the farm, which is something she never wanted to do. Such as the fact that in "Boys and Girls" the main family is not poor and has a fairly good business raising foxes and selling there pelts. They are also ridiculed throughout the story in "mercy Among the Children" but in "Boys and Girls" they are not. iminated throughout this story from the townsfolk and the children at school. Autumn is made fun of because she is albino. After the narrator sees the horse killed it touches her inside and makes her look at her life and think. " I am a porcelain doll,"she whispered, worth much money-I am kind of a Pinochio-I do not lie. She never spoke, never moved, never batted an eye. By providing the family with food and by protecting Autumn from Griffin and other bullies at school. In conclusion the many aspects of theme conveyed in "Mercy Among th Children" and "Boys and Girls" creates a dramatic feel and gives the reader something to relate to in themes such as maturing, gender, poverty and many others discussed in these stories.
