Battle Royal
In the "Battle Royal" by Ralph Ellison, there is a part in the story that the narrator is told "We mean to do by you, but you've got to know your place at all times" (Ellison 239). He wrote a speech for his graduation and one of his teachers like it, so the teacher told Ellison to go read his speech in the main ballroom of a top quality hotel. For that reason, Ellison was always debating himself. He had to go through an emotional rollercoaster before he convinces himself that he I invisible. Also, he relates to a young lady that was in the same ballroom as he was in. The only problem he had was he was always confused about things. When Ellison was saying his speech, he thought he was saying it to himself because no one was paying attention. She was there for the same reason Ellison and a group of color people were there for and it was for the white men that were there entertainment. He understood almost everything that happens to him. He also understood his family background: for instance, "I am not ashamed of my grandparents for having been slaves. The reason for all the debating was because right before his grandfather died he said, "Son [Ellison dad], after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight. The biggest issues Ellison had debating himself on everything that he was told by the white people. So ever since Ellison heard that every time he gets a good comment from a white person, he wouldn't know how to take it. The second thing he understood was that he was able to relate to the young lady that was in the ballroom too. ck man trying to make it in a so call white person world.
