Marcus Mosiah Garvey, born Malchus Mosiah Garvey Jr., was born on August 17, 1887, in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. He was the youngest of 11 children but grew up an only child because only he and his sister lived into adulthood and she resided in England. Marcus grew up in an integrated neighborhood and didn’t pay attention to skin color early in life. At the age of 14 there was an event that changed Marcus’s life. His neighbors decided to send their daughter away from home to continue her education. What most impressed me about this man was his ability to make the best of what he had. A mind to go on and the ability to shake off negativity allowed him to go on and be the great man that he was in his life. It was here that he learned the power of the written word. I would say he was the one who actually laid the road out for those to come after him. The Universal Negro Improvement Association was used as a tool to help unite and redeem the black race. One must be intelligent to lead people.
