Smoking Ban

As the debates continue on who has the right to make a decision on whether or not to instate a smoking ban, it is extremely important that everyone get their opinion heard on this topic. This ban is more important than many laws being deliberated in congress because of the fact that it will affect such a large amount of people. Many go into restaurants or bars regularly, and almost everyone goes at least once in a while. Smoking tobacco has also become a popular part of our culture, as over 50 million Americans smoke, going through about 540 billion cigarettes a year (Korot). The restaurant business is also a vital part of our economy and we need laws that not only protect the people of our country but also look out for everyone's best interests from a financial situation as well. Because a total smoking ban would hurt the economy and negatively affect so many Americans, there should not be a total ban put in place, but rather policies that allow the owners to decide whether or not to allow smoking in their particular establishment. The smoking ban is not a new concept as the very first statewide indoor smoking ban was put into place in 1975 in Minnesota. It was called the Clean Indoor Air Act but the state has since withd

In Fayetteville five "long- standing restaurants" closed within three months of the smoking ban (Cody). Tobacco is still a legal substance, which means that it must be treated as such. This way both parties will have a place to go, and everyone will be content. Alcohol is a substance that the government says takes even more responsibility to use than tobacco, as you must be three years older to drink than to smoke. There are hundreds of thousands of restaurants and bars spread across the country, in all sorts of locations. Although these are good points, it is not fair to simply take away smoking in public because some people simply do not like the atmosphere. This country is so great because people have so many rights, but this ban takes away from those rights, which then takes away from the ideals of this country. Smokers will not stay around to order food and drink alcohol if they are uncomfortable. With the ban in effect, many smokers have found it more convenient to stay home or go over to a friend's house instead of dealing with the troubles that the ban brings. Research shows that over 90% of restaurants prove to be unsuccessful and eventually go out of business (Willis). The truth is that the restaurant business is extremely difficult to be successful in, even without the bans taking away from much needed business. The bottom line is that this ban will cause everyone in the country to lose money, and will hurt the economy on the whole. The government cannot make everything that is somewhat dangerous illegal, as people have the right to have a good time as long as they do not go too far. There are many things in life far more dangerous than second hand smoke, yet are still legal. Those who do have children also need a break, and the ability to spend time in places designed for them.
