Drinking and driving: lobby groups

             Drinking and Driving has become a huge problem in Canada and the US in the past 20 years. Last year in the US there were 42, 623 traffic deaths and 17, 013 were alcohol related that's an average of one death every 30 minutes. That's 40% of all traffic deaths are caused by drunk driving. These deaths are causing many complications in peoples lives whether its someone losing a family member to someone having to live in a wheelchair for the rest of there life, its really sad and something should be done about this. This is a problem that is trying to be fixed by society, in the US in 2002 1.5 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. This is an arrest rate of 1 for every 130 licensed drivers in the United States.
             Lobby groups are organizations that stand for something and want to voice their opinions on a topic. For example MADD is a lobby group for drinking and driving and they're a huge organization throughout North America. MADD stands for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and they're main goal is to prevent people from drinking and driving because it is a huge killer in Canada and US. In 1979, five-and-a-half-month-old Laura Lamb became one of the world's youngest quadriplegics when Laura and her mother, Cindi, were hit head-on by a repeat drunk driving offender traveling at 120 mph. As an outcome of the crash, Cindi and her friends started a war against drunk driving in their home state of Maryland. Less than a year later, on the other side of the country in California, 13-year-old Cari Lightner was killed at the hands of a drunk driver. Two days earlier, the offender was released on bail for a hit-and-run drunk driving crash. He already had two drunk driving convictions with a third plea-bargained to "reckless accident."
