Alcohol Abuse: A Choice
The society we live in is strongly influenced by alcohol, and people of all ages, gender, and backgrounds have been exposed to it from millionaires to the homeless. Drinking alcohol is a choice and we should understand, that if we engage in drinking or abuse our rights as Americans to drink, we must face the consequences. Many influential and popular people have had problems with alcohol since it was first introduced and even still today. For example, Andrew Jackson was inaugurated into office on March 4th, 1829 and threw one of the biggest and most remembered parties in American history (American Passages). People from this time period did not see drinking alcohol as a serious problem. Alcohol was used simply as an extra party favor. Throughout the years alcohol remained and continued to be seen as a recreational activity. Many celebrities and important people associate with various forms of alcohol. Alcohol ads feature very healthy, attractive, and youthful looking people to promote drinking as being cool (health20-20). Teaching the dangers of alcohol could provide valuable lessons to our youth and future generations. An accident by an alcohol-impaired driver is one of the most frequently committed violent crimes in the United States today. Driving while intoxicated is by far one of the largest single problems Americans face today (council). The reality is that it is dangerous and can be deadly. We have the choice to drink alcohol. Thousands of people die every year because of alcohol related crimes and accidents. These examples show that alcohol has been widely used and that some of the most influential people of our time drink alcohol. With such a high rate of our population drinking, we should all be concerned with alcohol and it's effects in our communities. There are numerous magazine ads and commercials we see everyday that show drinking is fun and accepted. A generation that is widely influenced with these ads is naturally more prone to see alcohol as a sport or a past time. It is no wonder why so many people accept drinking as a normal function. It is valuable that we learn the dangers and consequences of drinking alcohol as a generation. Americans must promote healthy living and lifestyles to inform others of the dangers of alcohol. Alcohol causes many accidents and death throughout the country, and could be easily prevented.
