Alcohol Abuse: A Choice

             The society we live in is strongly influenced by alcohol, and people of all ages, gender, and backgrounds have been exposed to it from millionaires to the homeless. Drinking alcohol is a choice and we should understand, that if we engage in drinking or abuse our rights as Americans to drink, we must face the consequences.
             Many influential and popular people have had problems with alcohol since it was first introduced and even still today. For example, Andrew Jackson was inaugurated into office on March 4th, 1829 and threw one of the biggest and most remembered parties in American history (American Passages). People from this time period did not see drinking alcohol as a serious problem. Alcohol was used simply as an extra party favor. Throughout the years alcohol remained and continued to be seen as a recreational activity. Many celebrities and important people associate with various forms of alcohol. Determining when alcohol should be used or when it is abused is hard to distinguish. What is appropriate social drinking and what is not appropriate? The Bush twins for instance, have had occurrences with alcohol. On May 29th, 2001 Jenna Bush was charged with trying to use a third party's identification (fake ID) to purchase alcohol at a Mexican restaurant near the University of Texas. At the same incident, Barbara Bush, was charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol (wikipedia). These examples show that alcohol has been widely used and that some of the most influential people of our time drink alcohol. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone we accept the bahavior.
             There are numerous magazine ads and commercials we see everyday that show drinking is fun and accepted. The reality is that it is dangerous and can be deadly.
