Advertising: Promoting the Use of Cigarettes

             It often goes unnoticed how strongly people are influenced by advertisements. Whether it is on television, in magazines, or on billboards, advertisements persuade people one way or the other. It's not until one feels themselves caving under the pressure of the advertisers that they realize the impact that it actually has. Without all of these advertisements people wouldn't be persuaded to participate in the activities they do today. While adults have a better idea of what is right or wrong for them, teens are the main target of these advertisements. Cigarette advertisements, whether they are promoting smoking or attempting to prevent it, have a direct effect on adolescents' decision to smoke.
             Teens see advertisements on a day-to-day basis whether it is on television, in magazines, on billboards, or even at sports events. According to the two articles I read, these advertisements are everywhere and have a direct effect on the decisions of many teens today. In the article titled "Seventh Graders Self-Reported Exposure to Cigarette Marketing and Its Relationship to their Smoking Behavior" the author, Caroline Schooler, gives many important statistics and also lays out the effects of cigarette advertisements on adolescents and their smoking behavior. "It is estimated that 3000 young people become regular smokers every day, and if tobacco use rates among youth continue at current levels, 5,000,000 American children who are alive today will die from the tobacco-induced disease." Although this fact is well known, advertisements and promotions of cigarettes continue to expand. Advertisers are spending billions of dollars to promote their product, while it is destroying the lives of many. The first article sums up its main idea by stating, "Tobacco marketing does reach youth.
