Sieze and the third estate

What the Third Estate Contributed to The Declaration of the Right of Man and Citizen Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes was a French revolutionary who changed the course of the revolution with his famous pamphlet "What is the Third Estate". As written in Baker, this pamphlet shaped the demands of the Third Estate during the election of the States-General, defined their political strategy, and elaborated principles that were to become fundamental to the subsequent development of revolutionary ideology (Baker, 1987). Sieyes defines the Third Estate, what they have meant to French policies, and what they want to establish for themselves in politics in the future. Sieyes argues that the Third Estate deserves a voice in the policies and laws that rules their lives and not by those of the "privileged" do not have to live by the same laws. In his definition of the third estate as a nation, Sieyes argues that the third estate embodies everything that a nation needs to survive: first, they control the land, which does not necessarily mean that they own it, but they are the people who work the land and allow for land to prosper. Second, they increase the value of the goods from that land through human industry by becoming consumers of the product t

With few exceptions, nobles do not perform any function to society. In conclusion, Abbe Sieyes wrote a truly profound argument on why the Third Estate needed representation in their political system and he was right. The third and last claim of the Third Estate it that the Estates General vote not by orders, but by heads (Baker, 165). What is the Third Estate? Everything" (Baker, 157). Sieyes continues that if the third estate wants to be something to the nation then three things must happen. A lack of priveledge or nobility should not exempt citizens from basic rights such as a voice for their own good. First, they need representatives in the Estates General that actually belong to the Third Estate. These are the people who sell the goods for the owner and cause the other members of the third estate to buy products at the inflated price. His argument set fire to the revolution by giving a voice to the Third Estate. It will reflect a society that is a nation in and of itself because it adheres to a constitution that is followed by everyone. The feudal system was the reason France was divided in their current situation and it results in the oppression of the lower order. If the representative of the Third Estate were to fall victim to corruption or feudalism then the goal of the Third estate would be lost. Citizens are placing faith on their representatives in the Estates General where the general will is decided. To become a legitimate society, the nation must form a natural common and individual will.
