SHADOWED LIVES: UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS IN AMERICAN SOCIETY
When I began reading this book, I came into reading it with a closed mind. However, as I read further I allowed myself to be changed and adjust my life as did some "illegals". Unlike the Green Valley immigrants though I did not have to be feverishly moved and forced out of my dwelling because of my type of life. The way the book was written you begin to understand that the Green Valley people were not a nuisance but simple creatures like each of us that adapted to their surroundings as only they knew how to. The way that the Green Valley residents changed to live and survive in San Diego is a prime example of culture change. We first see culture change when the Green Valley residents adapt there living pattern to that of a modern society. They built restaurants and even had some running water in certain locations. The residents built a culture all their own by developing relationships friend and family in a foreign land. It is interesting to note that the people of Green Valley not only experienced a form of what one might call a "culture evolution", but also a culture transplan
Unfortunately the way I was brought up the immigrants from Mexico, Cuba, etc. Gender roles play a significant role in the way "illegal aliens" support themselves as well as their own family. The simple roles each gender plays is not a definitive answer itself because in several illustrations the book uses the women do not work, however in many cases the women do work. I think that the undocumented workers shown in this book are what the U. One thing that the book mentions is that the community of illegal's at Green Valley was predominately male, but further in the book it refers to undocumented migrants not living in Green Valley having both male and female working and still raising a family in what little spare time they have. The prime topic of interest that has plagued me in this story is that of acculturation and the Green Valley residents. Not necessarily the "illegal" aspect of it, but the hardworking values that these people have and how they value their way of life. A lot of gender based employment for the "illegals" is dependent on the necessity of the work and the need to either support their family in the U. Based on the reading it is safe to say the men almost always were working or looking for work, but the females only sometimes were the only one who worked out in the job market. To support the case of the female in the job market all that has to be looked at is the woman who immigrated to America with her children after husband had abandoned her in Mexico and ended up trying to find work here. The clash between these two communities ultimately caused the demise for people whose only goal was to get a better way of life for themselves and in many cases the future of their families.
