The Cell Phone narrtion

             The two stories I read were "The Library Card" by Richard Wrights and "How Not to Use the Cellular Phone" by Umberto Eco. The two stories had very different styles and were told in different ways. "The Library Card" was a very serious story, showing a strong internal struggle. "How Not to Use the Cellular Phone" was a more lighthearted story.
             I believe that narration is an important part of the story. There is no right or wrong way to narrate stories, but an effective narrator can alter the emotion the reader gets while reading it. Narration sets the tone for the story, conveys the atmosphere and the feelings of the characters. If the narrator is not a character in the story, they almost always become one because they play an integral role in the plot. Narration comes in three different forms, first person, where the story is told focusing on one character. In this form "I" is used most commonly. The second form is third person, where the narrator of the story is not involved in the action. The final form is omniscient, where the narrator knows all and sees things from multiple characters' points of view.
             In the story "The Library Card" the narrator is in first person. The setting is during a time period where there was turmoil between blacks and whites. At this time the blacks were struggling for equality. One of the ways the blacks were repressed was because they were not allowed to take out books from the library and were encouraged not to read. The main character, Richard, enjoyed reading. He tested the limits and eventually surpassed them. The library card was a symbol of change. The more he read, the more conflicted he became. As pages flew by, so did the layers of his former self. He was evolving and becoming educated about the issues that his race faced every day.
