Children and Television Violence

             "No one likes you, you don't fit in with me and my friends." "Loser!" A kid pushes another on the playground. These are all instances of violence. Everyday instances done by children, the question is, where do they learn these acts? Some might say home enviornment or school. Though these can be stressors, the television programs children watch might possibly have a significant impact. To answer this question, I choose three programs found on Nickelodeon and Disney. These programs were titled The Proud Family, Braceface, and All That. These programs aired from four-thirty to five-thirty, and all showed acts of violence.
             The main differences between the violence was verbal and non verbal. In The Proud Family, This particular episode, the mom was committing most of the violent acts. She was upset because a maid is taking over all of her motherly duties. She on many occasions calls her names our of jealousy and pushes the maid over to get to the ringing door. Braceface had similar examples. One particular character calls another "nasal nerd". A lot of threats are made as well. A character threatens to reveal a secret of the other does not complete a task. Voice fluctuations too seemed to be hostile. For instance a female character thinks her friend is acting dumb, so in a snobby tone she calls her "miss Einstein" and "Seriously, what good are you?" All That was all about the physical violence; putting a bell on a persons head, hitting it, and asking him on a rate of one to ten, how much it hurt. They slam doors in each others faces, while screaming and yelling.
             Overall, the cartoon programs (The Proud Family and Braceface) were more verbally aggressive. All That was physically aggressive. This show was also the one centered on older children while the others tended to be middle school age. The episodes seemed to stem from feelings
