Teen Suicide, An Epidemic

Every year thousands of youth die by their own hands. They make the choice that they want to die, and they take their own life. According to Richard O'Connor Teen Suicide: Statistics show that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among those 15 to 25 years of age, and the 6th leading cause of death among those 5 to 14 years of age. According to Bruce Bongar, "It is estimated that 500,000 teenagers try to kill themselves every year, and about 5000 succeed. Teenage suicide occurs at an alarming rate, and can be directly linked to three main causes: depression, substance abuse, and relationships"(18). Sadly, many times the person contemplating the act of suicide shows classic symptoms of asking for help, but loved ones such as family and friends fail to notice the signs. The person doesn't even realize the impact that this will have on family members or school friends. The suicide victim is so depressed that they finally decide to just give up on life. They honestly think that killing themselves would be better than trying to live through the pain. Sadly enough, they don't care about the family member or school friends. They're so focused on their pain; they can't seem to think of anything else.

Family members usually want to know the cause of death. Teens need a release from anger: no one should keep it locked away for long. Try to talk openly and freely and ask question about the person's intention, accept what is said and treat it seriously, ask what the problem is, and be frank and ask them if they're thinking of giving up on life, or ending it all, listen, for a person who is feeling suicidal is in a state of emotional crisis, do not add to the guilt by debating, arguing, or lecturing about whether or not suicide is right or wrong. Sometimes the symptoms of mood disorders take on different forms in children than in adults. At the same time, things would have been fine had Paul not ran out of money. When Paul saw all that he could have in New York, he let his defense down. Substance abuse is the leading cause of suicide. If you learn specific plans of committing suicide, stay with the person, and if possible, get help. Better stress programs in high school will relieve the hard transition from middle school to high school. Everyone must love himself or herself to survive in today's world. In today's society, models with perfect bodies are a young girl's idols. According to Bruce Bongar, "lack of support or overt rejection of a person who is predominantly homosexual leads to a sense that the world will never be safe for him or her, and that it will be impossible to live and love openly, as can those who are predominantly heterosexual"(187). According to O'Connor "Unfortunately the drugs themselves have depressant effect, and lower inhibitions against self-injurious behavior. Some prevention that could be used: When the victim talks of suicide, he or she should be taken seriously. Teens are at risk every day because life becomes very difficult, and competition for good grades or rejection from a relationship places strong demands on them.
