Throughout time, mankind has been troubled with the idea of faith. Some would say faith is belief, while others would say faith is knowledge. However, one of the most prominent questions surrounding the idea of faith is, "Does one have to be required to justify their faith?" Philosopher, Soren Kierkegaarv, would have said, "No." He believed faith is not knowledge but a passionate commitment. He also believed faith is an idea which gives one's life meaning and purpose. On the other hand, many philosophers would not agree with Kierkeaarv. They would answer, "Yes," and ask one to justify their faith. St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, William Paley, and Bertrand Russell are some of the few philosophers that say faith is knowledge. They would go on to say, mere belief is nothing other than opinion. An opinion is one's idea of preference and thus, believing something does not require justification whereas, faith as knowledge is true justified With the idea of faith, still fresh in our minds, a creative writer from the nineteenth century named, Fyodeor Dostoevsky, brings problem of evil to our attention.
" The problem with the cosmological argument is that there is an infinite amount of regress, going back and forth, in the argument. The problem of this solution is if people are free to choose, then God is not omniscient. " Here Russell is telling us that in Christ's' preaching the use of fear was incorporated to help make non-believers into believers by scaring them. Thomas Aquinas and William Paley on the other hand give three proofs on the existence of God. I am eastern orthodox Christian, I have been baptized at a very young age, and I do attend church as much as I can. The Ethical lifestyle says you put your life in an ideal. He believed to understand faith one must understand human nature. One other reason why I like Kierkegaard work better is because I to believe that faith doesn't need to be justified, I believe what I believe and if I feel good about it and I'm not hurting anyone around one, why should the fact that it can be proven or not matter. The implication with problem of evil leaves one of three choices: One is denying the existence of God, two is denying the existence of evil, and three is prove the existence of God independently. What this is all implicating is that God is not perfect. "I meant to speak of the suffering of mankind generally, but we had better confine ourselves to the sufferings of the children. Russell also stated the moral problem of which the idea of God should be rejected, one example of this is, "'Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell. The past informs the present, where the future guides the present. He says you would think the watch had a creator and wasn't just put there because all the parts fit perfectly with each other and that's the reason why it works, "the inference we think is inevitable, that the watch must have had a marker.
