Strangers On A Train

             Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train features two very different people. Guy Haines and Charley Bruno invade each others' lives the moment they meet on the train headed south. Even with their obvious differences it turns out that the two men are the two sides of the same coin. With each invasion into the opposite's life they both change slowly into two people who think exactly the same. Chapter 22 is a point in the book where Guy is making the transition into the ways of Bruno.
             Guy wakes up and is haunted by Bruno's pressure to kill Samuel Bruno. Throughout the day he is plagued by Bruno's voice in his head. It is always telling Guy detailed plans of the murder. In Guy's head it never stops. This is leading Guy to think like Bruno by knowing every aspect of the murder from the actual act down to the squeaky stair he should skip.
             Guy's personality is not the kind that can deal with this kind of pressure. He is a person that is very moved by the opinions of others. He will think about the consequences as well as the reactions of people before he does something. Because of this every time he is contacted by Bruno he feels disgusted. But at the same time the constant wearing down of Guy's personality makes him welcome the calls. It feels to him like a relief to the pressure building up inside. The chapter tells us that Guy is about to crack.
             The calls and letters in chapter 22 tell us some of Bruno's personality. He seems obsessed to stay in contact with Guy even if Guy does not answer. Bruno is hardly without a person to interact with in the story. It seems that Bruno is most active when interacting with Guy. The only thing Bruno seems to do in the story is push his own personality onto Guy. Bruno is always reminding Guy to repay the "favor" he did by killing his wife.
