Novel vs. movie
Inside every human is a savage evil side that society suppresses. This evil side often breaks out during times of isolation and confrontation between cultures. Whenever different cultures meet, there is often a fear of change or corruption within those cultures and also loss of self that leads to discover more about one's identity. Joseph Conrad once wrote, "The individual consciousness was destined to be in total contradiction to its physical and moral environment". The physiological and psychological changes in the characters are reflected both in his Heart of Darkness and Coppola's Apocalypse Now as they go on with their journeys to the Congo and the Nung. In both the book and the movie, the various events along each individual journey help illustrate not only the physical deterioration of the environment and the characters' health but also the psychological decline of the characters' conscience and consciousness. It was a lie, and the more I saw of them, the more I hated lies. As they involve themselves deeper and deeper into the 'darkest' part of the world, they, like Marlow who unable to cope with the savagery around him, loose themselves into the wilderness. In Heart of Darkness, the boat begins to fall apart when it was attacked by the savages among a "tumult of angry of warlike yells". They will realize that there's a conflict in the human heart between good and evil, and good does not always triumph. We'd cut them in half with a machine gun and give them a band-aid. " Also, in the end of the movie, Willard kills Kurtz like the way the savages massacred the cow contrast to the novel when Kurtz body voluntarily gave up because of malaria. Willard says later on, "it was the way we had over here of living with ourselves. In Heart of Darkness, signs of physical fatigue of the crew have escalated along the journey. Interestingly, in both the movie and the novel, the fog signifies vulnerability against the 'unseen'. Similarly in Apocalypse Now, the situation is chaotic, with the crew firing aimlessly into the thick, dense bushes. During both attacks, Marlow and Willard tries to stop the misunderstanding between the two clashing cultures. A most significant event takes place towards the end of river journeys when both ships undergo attack from the shore. All in all, people usually live their lives sheltered in their own society.
