"Death of a Salesman" Characterization of Linda Loman

             The character Linda Loman, who plays the role as Willy Loman's wife, in Arthur Miller's play, "Death of a Salesman" does not play a very important part in the story. Her character portrays the typical American wife of that time. This is directly indicated by her obedient behavior, the way she hides her feelings, and the way she controls her 2 sons. Linda enables her husband Willy to live in a fantasy world, because she knows that the truth would bring nothing but hurt to him, and she didn't want to see him in pain so she decides to hide the truth. As a lot of people nowadays would refer to that type of action as, "What he or she doesn't know can't hurt them." Her character does not seem to change much throughout the play. Linda behaves as the "perfect" wife and mother should in that time frame. However, this lifestyle of hers ultimately leads to the downfall of her husband.
             First off, Linda is a very supportive woman. In a sense, she is over submissive. She follows all her husband's rules and is always beside him, it's as if she is a zombie, she never fails to agree with him anytime during the play. You can refer to her actions as being loyal. One example, of this submission on her part is when she agrees with Willy, about the success of his business when in fact she knows that Willy is making no money and he is a very unsuccessful man in pretty much everything and anything he does. But still, she encourages him, telling him positive things and letting him know that she is beside him through thick and thin. "Miller ennobles Linda as the long-suffering and devoted wife, he nevertheless shows Willy Loman to be undeserving of the respect and admiration Linda accords him" (http://www.mrtravers.com/new_page_2.htm).
