Video Game Violence and Kids

             Despite all of the controversy, video games do not cause violent behavior in mature players. For many years now, psychologists have been studying how video game violence affects kids. Many studies have proven that video games do not directly cause violent behavior. Research has shown that video games affect children more than adults because violent video games are not aimed towards kids. The developers of these games make them for mature minded players. Entertainment Software Rating Board ratings are used to prevent kids from purchasing mature rated games. If a game is rated mature, a customer must be at least seventeen years of age to purchase it. Many games like Max Payne, Counter-Strike, and the ever popular Grand Theft Auto are some of the most violent games on the market right now. Although these games are violent, they do not teach violence. In all of these games a player uses weapons of mass destruction, but none of these games teaches a player how to accurately fire a high caliber sniper rifle. Violent video games are not psychologically bad for mature players, but they should not be played by children.
             Gory video games contribute to an atmosphere that introduce children to violence, leading to increasingly violent behavior and horrific events, like the recent schoolyard shootings (Deutsch). Events like this are traced back to what influenced kids the most, graphic video games. There are numerous games that have been out on the market for quite some time that promote violence, but most parents do not realize this when they buy the games for their children. "Although most of the products on the market can legitimately be called 'games,' some of the ultra-violent games might be more accurately called 'kill-for-fun murder simulations' and are inappropriate for children."
