Depiction of health in popular magazines
According to World's Health Organization, health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The importance of cultural factors, particularly the media, in both imparting health information and impacting on the nation's health has been noted for more than a decade. The news media, especially magazines is particularly important source of information about health for the general public (Freimuth etal., 1984; Simpkins & Brenner, 1984). The success or failure of education and information campaigns depends largely on the broader cultural context into which they are injected. For the majority of Americans, the media have become a major source of health information. The average America may visit a doctor one or two times a year, probably reads a newspaper or magazine article about health a few times a month, and may watch several television shows featuring a medical problem each week (Sandman, 1976). The mass media play an important role in the lives of most people. However, those who control access to and the content of the media (often called gatekeepers) may not be overly concerned about the need to educate the public about health. Magazin
MethodsOur analysis covered the month of April 2002. Negative one represented a negative relationship, in which there is the presence of an article on tobacco and an article against smoking. In essence, these magazines negated the possibility of women getting heart disease; women were instead, portrayed in the traditional role of caretaker. As mentioned above, there is self-censorship of editorial content in regards to advertisers' demand, therefore, we are concern about the censorship of important health issues in these magazines when the scope of coverage is already narrowed by the orientation of audience of the magazine. We drew articles and advertisements from 4 categories of magazines: Male, Female, Health and Teen magazines. Conclusion + Shortcomings Finding of this study indicate that, in addition to educating people about health, magazine coverage pf health issues could influence public beliefs about the importance of these issues. On one article "Although major improvement might still be necessarily applied to the content of women's magazine, these suggested that a number of women's magazine have shifted quite noticeably away from the three 'R's of royalty, recipes and romance into a more worth-reading magazine. As presented in the above graph, we concluded that each magazine does have its own focus of health coverage due to different target audience that they are trying to capture. However, a negative as well as neutral correlation was obtained for cigarettes and 2 positive correlations on workout and exercise machine were attained. They found that both nutrition and fitness coverage primarily emphasized weight loss and physical appearance. We found, from 2 women magazines and 1women's health magazine, a total of 13 articles discussing on health-related An article on "Generation Next" in Elle implored readers to be more fitness-conscious as it helps to regulate blood circulation in our body, which in turn, help to reduce stress and mood-swing. Reporters and editors must decide what appeal to readers, a process that is far from an exact science. The third hypothesis is to find out if there are any positive correlation between the editorial content and advertisement presented.
