Odyssey

The part of The Odyssey that group two focused on was very interesting and exciting. Odysseus and his men sail to the islands of Aenea and Circe, where they find the Sirens on the island of Capri. Odysseus puts bees' wax in his men's ears so that they will not be lured to their deaths by the sweet voices of the Sirens. Odysseus orders his men tie him tightly to the mast of the ship, and not untie him no matter how much he begs, so that he alone may listen to the Sirens and not get killed. When he hears them, he tells them to untie him, but they just tie him tighter. They make it out alive, and keep on sailing towards Ithaca.
This part of the epic shows the temptation that Odysseus and his men went through and overcame. Any of those men could have pulled the bees' wax out of their ears if they really wanted to hear the lovely voices of the Sirens. They showed how even if something is very tempting, resisting and ignoring it pays off in the end. If they had pulled the bees' wax out of their ears, they would have been lured to their deaths. We should all listen to the many lessons that stories and history teach us, so that we will learn from other's mistakes and live better lives.
The people in group two chose this part of the epic because they liked the Sirens and how Odysseus and his men dealt with them. There are also many great works of art about this part of the epic. There are vases, cups, plates, urns and many more interesting
and beautiful pieces of artwork showing Odysseus and the Sirens. There is a picture of the Sirens attempting to seduce Odysseus and his men. We found it in Women in Classical Mythology at Princeton. There is also the three handled hydria with a siren on the vertical handle. We found this in Hellenic Ministry of Culture. There is also a drawing, and
a painting, of Odysseus and the Sirens that we found at http://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/SIREN
