Chrysalids

In John Wyndham's novel, The Chrysalids, he stresses the theme of the novel through change. The Chrysalids expresses its theme of change through the title of the novel, through the main character, David, and the escape, in the end. The situations and the definition of chrysalids are very well used to back up the title. David's life through out the novel goes through many stages. His life is the best value to relate to the theme, change. Realization comes in quite well to support the escape. Wyndham reveals the theme in a way to understand the novel. The title of the novel is endorsed strongly towards the theme. The word chrysalids comes from the word "chrysalis." This word means, a protected stage of development. An example would be, when a caterpillar covers itself, forming a cocoon. In that stage the caterpillar slowly forms and finally bursts out into a winged adult. There is always a start to everything to form something new. In this novel there is always a start, but the finished product was not constantly a success. Just like a caterpillar, it may begin to form incorrectly. The aftereffect will become peculiar. The novel also attaints to live

Struggling in life will just lead to a dilemma; also when a caterpillar does not form properly. If the change is not noticed then, there will be no difference. Once something is done properly, the synthetic will be a success. Another proof of his change was being in love. This was clearly a presage that related to change. When he was forced to tell about Sophie he felt hurt. He felt this way because he did not want to lose her. She had been born being telepathic as well. For example in chapter three he had a dream that Sophie got killed because she is deviant, ". Then when they flew, that symbolized the new beginning. He raised his hand high, and as he swept it down the knife flashed in the light of the rising sun, just as it had flashed when he cut the calf's throat. my father held Sophie with one arm just as he held the struggling calf.
