War has built nations into great powers while bringing others to great ruin. Because of the threat of war, and the possibility of being conquered, countries put great importance on the strength of their military. The Manhattan Project was deemed a success and accomplished what it was set out to do; build a nuclear bomb. It was named after the Manhattan Engineer District of the US Army Corps of Engineers, based in New York City, where much of the early research was done (Jones 23). The second type of bomb that was built was made with Plutonium and as a result was much more complex. Some scientists who worked on the project did advocate using the bomb if it would save American lives. Because they were not entirely confident on the bombs workability, they tested the design on July 16, 1945. The Japanese were deeply entrenched in their positions and were fighting to the death; they had nowhere to retreat to. However, the project was carried out in university research laboratories across the United States. The army had originally hoped to be able to use the bomb in the European theatre against Nazi Germany, but by the time the Los Alamos team had a working model ready the war in Europe was over. Little Boy was a straightforward design that used a gun-type device to detonate it. The team would have surely built more bombs of this type if there was an adequate amount of Uranium available (Jones 506). Many of the scientists who worked on the bomb were terrified of the idea of it being used and sought for the United States to find a peaceful end to the war. However, the research on the actual building of the bomb was done in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Since the project, many scientists who worked on the bomb began research on peaceful applications of nuclear energy, using the tremendous energy it holds to power the country. The decision to drop the bomb did not come easy for Truman, but he truly did believe that it would save many American lives and even save the lives of Japanese who would be killed by a bloody invasion (Jones 490). In 1939 the world was on the brink of war.
