Examining Dimmesdale
Throughout the novel The Scarlet Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses to the reader the latter effect between Hester Prynne and Roger Chillingworth. Yet we see that Arthur Dimmesdale, involved in the triangle with Hester and Roger, does not seem to take any part in such latter effect. He does, however, hold that heroic image . This is shown by the stand he takes when Hester goes to the Governor's hall. Also when he discusses spiritual sickness with Roger Chillingworth. Towards the end of the novel Arthur finally accepts his fault and paternity of Pearl publicly. In chapter eight Hester goes to the Governor's hall to in plea in her favor for custody of Pearl. After a few moments of discussion and seeing herself helpless Hester turns to Arthur for
He defended his child and her mother at the beginning of the book. He then goes on to say that many sinners have confessed to him their many faults and feel better after doing so. Towards the end of the novel Arthur Dimmesdale finally accepts his parenthood over Pearl. This is a great stand for my thesis because it makes him the better man after all. It takes a great person to admit his or her mistake, and after all this Dimmesdale accepted his error. Dimmesdale argues that some sins should be kept secret because if confessed, would now make the past any better. Pearl is therefore to be with her mother to fulfill her task reminding Hester of her sin and as penitence. He then defended himself and Hester in a very indirect way when he argued with Chillingworth and he took on his responsibility at the end of the novel, even if he died shortly afterwards. In all, although Arthur Dimmesdale had his fault, at the end he gained his honor back. It may not seem like that to the town but to me, the reader, he did the correct thing. People might say that the confession he made after his election speech did nothing for better his name but I say it did. All this time he was indecisive but towards the end the gained that honor he was losing. It's true, he took some time to accept it and showed to be pretty cowardly, but at the end he stood up and bravely accepted his fault. He finally stood up for himself and that makes him a hero, in his own special way.
