Chaucer

             Throughout the Medieval Times (1300-1500), Lords and Barons governed the society and made sure chaos didn't occur, this included ridiculing the hierarchy. Anyone who would disrespect the higher class would get hanged or jailed. Many poets in those times, refrained from directly talking about the upper class, instead they would indirectly comment about the society as a whole and the inequality of the people. Jeffrey Chaucer, who was a poet at that time, obliquely criticized and remarked about the upper class by using sarcasm as a way to show their flaws and create awareness for the lower class. While on a pilgrimage to Canterbury, Chaucer observed the 29 pilgrims and individually wrote about each one's persona, clothing and lifestyle. He differentiates which pilgrims were knowledgeable and honest and which pilgrims were voracious and fake.
             Initially, Chaucer accepted the Knight to be a very honourable and respectable person. In describing the Knight, Chaucer portrayed his clothing, personality and his role in society. "A Knyght ther was, and that a worthy man (Line 43)...Trouthe and honour, freedom and curteisie (Line 46)...He was a verray parfit, gentil knight (Line 72)" this shows that Chaucer has high respect for the Knight, and although the Knight is within the higher class, he isn't cocky or arrogant but instead humble and kind. "His hors were goode, but he was nat gay...Of fustian he wered a gypoun (Line 74-75)" From this quote, the Knight seems like a modest and reserved person by exhibiting that while he may be wealthy, he still wears clothing that isn't from the finest cloths and that he would rather dress up his horses rather than himself.
