Music Review
On October 24, 2003, I went to the Student Voice Recital. There were a variety of performances in the venue with informal seating, specializing in classical music with the accompaniment of a single piano. Each performer had their strengths and weaknesses. Some people were more expressive, some had a wider vocal range, or some had more stage presence than others who performed. There were a group of performers who I thought did particularly well. They each showed a range of vocal strength, stage presence, and musical presentation.Kristofer Huben sang "Down by the Sally Gardens" by Benjamin Britten and "O Columbia, il tenero fido Arleccchin" by Ruggiero Leoncavallo, which showed off his great tenor voice. His voice proved unique and his overall presentation distinguished him from the other male perfo
It was also clear that he had profound knowledge of the style in which he was singing. His voice had charisma and personality. Her voice sounded so rich, firm and splendid with only a piano to cushion it. She went through various emotions throughout both of her pieces, which ranged from angry to wistful to uplifting. He was able to incorporate hand gestures as well as a good amount of facial expression to show the nostalgic and wistful tone of his first song, "Down by the Sally Gardens. He also had a strong, attractive stage presence as well. Dan Johnson sings baritone and sang a beautiful song that was not listed in the program. He was able to show not only a good extent of his vocal range, but also his ability to bring his vocal production to life. Her voice was complimented by a sophisticated approach to phrasing and enunciation. When she sang, "Che faro senza Euridice" by Christoph Willibald Gluck and "Hotel" by Francis Poulec, she used a blend of head and mixed voice within her vocal register. It seemed as though he concentrated on technique and hearing himself, rather than being carried away by theatrics, instead letting his facial expressions throughout the piece come naturally, which made his performance all the better to watch. I also enjoyed Kristine Bell performance of "Sonnenuntergang" by Robert Franz and "Cruda sorta" by Gioacchino Rossini. " He had wonderful pronunciation and clarity throughout both pieces, and proficiently projected the text and his voice.
