Edgar Allen Poe

             Arguably one of the romantic writers of all time, Edgar Allen Poe wrote many successful poems and stories. A well-known poem of his is the Raven, a story of a man who has lost his wife and goes insane due to a crow taunting him in his study room. The Raven is a good example of Romanticism, showing how romantic writers favored feelings and intuition over reason. Poe's life had a large influence on his writing. He did a lot of drugs and alcohol, which may have contributed somewhat to his spooky writing style. The Raven is a good example of Poe's connection to the romantic world, seeing how it was one his best writings. Romantics considered poetry to be the highest expression of the imagination.
             The romantic period was a movement in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It marked the reaction in literature, philosophy, art, and religion of the previous period of time in its writer's style. The Romantic writers valued feelings and intuition over reason, as the rationalists did. Also, the writers look backward to the wisdom of the past and don't trust modern progress. Poe shows this in his famous poem, The Raven.
             Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. His mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, and his father, David Poe, Jr., both pursued acting careers. His mother attained some prominent leading roles, while his father achieved less stellar performance, though his acting was interrupted by alcohol binges. Edgar Allen Poe himself was also involved with drugs and alcohol, however, he claims he drank, not for pleasure, but to escape from "torturing memories . . . insupportable loneliness . . . a dread of some strange impending doom." It is debated heavily over whether or not Poe's use of drugs and alcohol affected his works and his writing style or not. This may have even affected him being a romantic writer.
