BIRTH ORDER AND RELATIONSHIPS IN ADULTHOOD

             Can something as simple as the sibling structure of our family truly determine the nature and quality of the relationships we develop throughout our lives? As human beings, there are countless variables that shape the complexity of our personalities and motivate our behaviors. That is perhaps why many would consider it absurd to assume that birth order molds us into who we are, thus predicting the type of partners and friends we will later seek out in adulthood. However, as bold as the claim may be, the theory has been researched extensively, and numerous studies have indeed discovered a link between birth order and relationship. It is not as straightforward as one might think however. As Dr. Kevin Leman highlights in his groundbreaking work ¡§The New Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are¡, although birth orders have certain general tendencies, the primordial idea is that dynamic, fluid relationships exist between members of the family which inevitably has a life effect on whom and what the person turns out to be.
             This paper aims to explore this theory in depth by first examining the basic concepts of the birth order so as to understand its influential role in the shaping of relationships. An outline of these general characteristics will be followed by a discussion of how they relate to the relationship aspect. With Leman¡s comprehensive book as the primary reference, I hope to shed some light on this fascinating theory that affects all of our lives.
