Extrasensory Perception
Although there is a lot of proof of extrasensory perception existing, there are also a lot of reasons why it could not be real. There have been many experiments and videotapes that show that ESP is real, but science makes it impossible. People have discovered lots of ways to fake ESP, so most people who claim to be psychic really are not. The different types of ESP or PSI are, telepathy, the ability to communicate with out the use of the five senses; precognition, the perception of the future; clairvoyance, perception of a present event; and psychokinesis, moving objects with the mind, or "mind over matter" (Ridgway). There have been a lot of experiments on animals that prove that ESP exists. An experiment was done on Siamese fighting fish by Dr. Broud to test for psychokinesis. Siamese Fighting fish are so aggressive that they attack their own reflections. Dr. Braud put rotating mirrors in a fish tank, with the Siamese fighting fish, and recorded their rotating speed. He concluded that the mirrors rotate slower when facing the fish (Rogo 44). Another experiment by Aristed Esser tested dogs having clairvoyance abilities. The results were that dogs' hearts beat faster when their owners or families are in trouble.
There have been many videos proving psychic abilities. After that, the receiver has four pictures to choose from, giving the receiver a twenty-five percent chance of choosing the picture that the sender was describing. However, a magician named James Randi revealed that she was only moving objects with static electricity (Polidoro 90). The first test for ESP was the Rhine experiments. Then, the sender in the other room describes a picture out loud for a half an hour. The results of the experiment were the same: thirty-five percent correct (Bem 296). Another test was done where the receiver goes to sleep, and the sender tries to send a picture to the person sleeping. A woman named Alla Vinogradova fooled a lot of people into thinking she could really move objects. People have different beliefs of ESP. Cold reading is where a "psychic" gives his or her client a very general analysis that could apply to anyone, but sounds like the reader really knows the client. The sender would then concentrate really hard on a picture. There were a lot of problems that the project was accused of having such as the cards being transparent, and the tester giving hints (Bem 292). Fake psychics use a technique called cold reading. There was a Ganzfeld Project that only had artistic people testing, and they got an average of fifty percent correct.
