Federalist View on the War of 1812

My fellow congressmen, as we all know the tension between the United States and Great Britain has grown exponentially since the Jeffersonian Republicans came to power back in 1801, and that trend seems to be spiraling out of control as of late. There are several recurring issues that we have with the whole notion of a war with Great Britain. First of which, is the fact that America is grossly unprepared for such a daunting undertaking as a war with mighty Great Britain. Jefferson's "navy" composed of measly gunboats will be totally obliterated by the large overpowering British frigates. Another of Jefferson's polices that puts us in an even direr situation is the state of our standing army. During his presidency he has elected to reduce the peacetime army to twenty five hundred men, and what are we to assume that these twenty five hundred soldiers can take on the brunt of the British army? In addition to this are we to assume that raw volunteers can possibly outwit the crack and disciplined British army? I think not.Jefferson as a president has neither the knowledge nor

" For once we commit to this war and ally with France we become a lamb being led to the slaughter. When the British are forced to deal with us their forces will be divided thus making this war an ample opportunity for Napoleon to gain the upper hand against Britain and once he has vanquished Britain and the rest of Europe what is stopping him from unleashing his military machine on us? Undoubtedly we as a nation will be in a severely weakened state no matter what the outcome of this war, thus making all the easier for Napoleon to march right over us. Let me also point out the fact that there are no nations will ally with us against Britain seeing as they themselves are almost all allied with Britain against France. Do you not see? Whoever loses this insufferable war Napoleon wins. And he assuredly does not have the diplomatic resolve to force such a proud and industrious nation as Great Britain to make concessions once this war is over that is if we win this Godforsaken war. Wars that we are grossly unprepared for have no business starting and that are incapable of having a positive outcome. So Henceforth we will write, speak, and preach against this intolerable war. So this in turn would stay our hand and would leave us no other alternative other than an alliance with France. For these and many more reasons we as federalists see this war as a costly, futile, and partisan venture that is likely to produce little good and much evil, and the best way to bring the conflict to an end, as most of my federalist colleagues agree, is to oppose it. If this war should occur it is undoubtedly known that we as a nation must seek alliances, and strong ones at that, if we are to be successful in our dealings with the British. I point to his military blunder in Tripoli that ended up being more of a laugh than a decisive victory. All I can ask of you is this; think to yourself does the United States really need to start a war with Britain? These war mongering "war hawks" have nothing better to do than to plot and conspire ways to start wars with natives and foreign nations alike. the tact for fighting a successful war. And we pray to God that this war shall not come to pass.
