Sociology
The development of sociology as a discipline is more of a lesson in history than anything else. Three factors that led to this development are: curiosity, willingness to challenge the norms and wanting to better ones position in society. Changes in history can also be related to advances in sociology as a discipline. Cultures have gone from believing everything the church tells them to believing that only the strong survive to now being able to think for themselves. For centuries cultures were led to believe that certain members of society were born into their positions because their God favored them in some way. For the longest the church ruled how people lived and viewed their life. Members of society were made to believe that they were born into their role because God made it so and that there was no way to move up the social ladder. Any challenge to this current thinking was met with strict and harsh punishment. However once people started questioning these believes more and more people also became curious. An event in history that can be related to this is the Crusades. The Catholic Church used knights to seek out and basically punish any non-believers. However with leaders such as Marx and Engels to challeng
To this day the British royal family is nothing more of a figure head. Sociology was used to fight stereotypes and dispel myths. Some changes that came about with the help of sociology would be the civil rights movement and the struggle for equal rights of women. The first question that was asked was why is this happening, then followed by how is it happening and is there anything we can do to prevent it from happening or make it better. The Catholic church was not the only one to lose control over society, after World War I people started challenging the rule of royalty that had been around for centuries. However social change did not stop there. The first challenge to the church was by Darwin's theory of only the strong survive. No longer were people buying the reasoning of the church. Another factor that led to sociology as a discipline is natural curiosity. The next issue facing modern day sociologists is the cause and effect of technology on cultures. Sociology as a discipline was made possible because a few individuals questioned the norm of everyday life. Darwin's theory dispelled the idea that God hand picked a select few to rule society. Marx envisioned a society where jobs and responsibilities as well as wealth were shared equally. However it did not stop there, when people started finding out why things in society happened, they wanted to know why and if possible if the events in question could be changed. Sociology also helped to bring about change in the civil rights movement and also the struggle for equal rights of women.
