Lord of the flies symbolism

             In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses extensive use of the technique of symbolism to create meaning.
             Piggy's glasses suggests intelligence, tools, and technology. In the beginning of the novel, when the glasses were at their intrinsic state, the glasses represented logic, and good judgment. The boys use "his specs-...as burning glasses!" (Golding 40) Throughout the book, the glasses' value slowly dissipates, materialistically, and as for usefulness. The glasses soon depict the devastation of all compassion for others. "Jack smacked Piggy's head. Piggy's glasses flew off..." (71) Jack obviously doesn't care about Piggy's feelings, or his ability to see.
             The group of boys represent a mini-community. The older boys, are metaphors for important political figures, and/or ruling citizens of money. They show this in the election. Roger says, "Let's have vote." and then Ralph rebuts with, "Yes!" (22) And with their command, the democracy of the island was formed. The "littleuns" stand for the everyday people. The civilized older boys, (Ralph and Piggy) show the intent of government by helping the "littluns" through their power. The more glutton-stricken elder boys, (Jack and Roger) abuse their power; searching to fulfill their greedy desires. All illustrating the everyday society that we live in.
             The conch demonstrates organization, control, and democracy. "We'll have to have 'Hands up' like at school... then I'll give them the conch." (33) The preceding quote accurately depicts the importance of the conch. The conch seems to be the only shred of regulation on the island of young boys. If one has the conch, then one has the power to speak, and to be heard. Much like in today's world, the power to get a message across to the public, is one way to control the population.
