The First
It was the year of 1998 and it was very cold outside. There wasn't a lot to do because Jack Frost was out. The place to hang out was at my grandmother's house, although she was much older than me, I still enjoyed being in her presence because she was young at heart and full of life. Normally, I wouldn't have so much time to spend with grandma, but for reason's that I would later realize the time I spent would greatly increase. On this day in particular grandma's demeanor was different from any other behavior seen before or that I witnessed. As she sat sipping Pepsi and watching television there was this distant look on her face. She loved her grand children; however she made it clear that she was not a daycare provider. This particular day all of the grandchildren and adults were there talking and laughing reminiscing on the good old days. As the night grew longer the children were getting tired. Grandma suggested that we leave all the grandchildren at her house, something she rarely does. We were all shocked but we figured since it was Friday why not let the children spend time with grandma. After the shock settled in, I began to realize something wasn't quite the same about grandma.
I received a telephone call from the mortgage company that the mortgage had not been paid. It was the day of grandma's doctor appointment and everyone was really nervous. Family members that had come to town all returned home. I said, "Grandma why are the children playing throughout the house?" she responded "Oh its ok let them play". The moment had come grandma was on her way to surgery. I decided not to visit because I figured she would need her rest. Well I did it, I pulled back the curtain and there she lay as if she was in a deep sleep. I begin to ask myself; "Why did I have to live so close to the hospital?" "Why did I have to drive so fast?" I stood on the outside of grandma's room and it would seem like forever. Everything seemed to be okay, until the x-ray returned from the lab. Finally I was ready to go in and see grandma. It was a day before grandma was to come home. I visited with her until visiting hours were over, leaving the hospital with such peace. Visiting grandma wasn't easy because she was taking so much medicine that most of the time she was sleeping. She asked was I ok and advised me not to go into the room alone. I think that night has forever changed me and if I had to do it all over again , I would not be the first, I would be the last.
