Main Characters in As Good As It Gets

             Melvin Udall is a romantic novelist, is selfish manic compulsive who is rude to all he meets. Carol Connelly is the waitress at the restaurant he visits every day, which changes his life after deciding to pursue a relationship with her. Carol is the only person that will put up with Melvin's rude behavior because she is trying to make more money to support her ill son. Melvin's gay neighbor Simon Bishop gives Melvin a whole new outlook on life when he goes into the hospital and gives Melvin responsibility to his dog Verdell. Verdell is a small little mutt that can't control his blatter, and Melvin is absolutely outraged in having to take care of him. The Characters work well together, teaching each other how to loosen up their tight schedules and take life a little less seriously. Melvin begins to relax about his day's agenda once he gets used to Verdell's company, and Carol stops worrying so much about her son once Melvin pays for constant help. In the end, all three of the Characters let loose and become an odd trio of friends.
             Melvin Udall, a cranky, cold-hearted, obsessive-compulsive writer, washes his hands dozens of times a day with a new bar of soap each time. He eats the same meal at the same table in the same restaurant at the same time every day. But when his next-door neighbor Simon (Greg Kinnear), a gay painter, is hospitalized after being attacked, Melvin is saddled with caring for the man's precious pooch while he's in the hospital. Melvin hates the idea of having to care for a dirty animal, But the neighbor's lover forces the dog on him, and suddenly Melvin's long-buried humanity begins to emerge. Melvin learns to cope with the dog's demands on his habitual schedule, but when he visits his restaurant for lunch, and his usual waitress is out for the day taking care of her sickly child, these compound changes become too much for him.
