Illiteracy

             Being illiterate has given me nothing but problems. As I left my house early Monday morning to apply at a construction company for a job as a laborer, I realized I wasn't sure whether to take a right or a left out of my driveway. My friend had informed me of the job he had found in the daily news paper and had given me directions to the company. I was still confused. He had told me to go left out of my driveway, but I didn't even know which direction left was. I ended up guessing and it worked out. I was able to find my way to the main road I was supposed to be on.
             After turning off my street and onto Dixwell Avenue, I decided to stop and grab breakfast at Burger King. I drove up and waited behind a long line of cars in the drive through line. I didn't have time to go inside and eat my breakfast; I'd have to eat in the car on my way to the place. I waited in line for a good five minutes and thought to myself about the job. With my lack of education, this job seemed to be a perfect opportunity. Finally it was my time to order. I looked at the large, colorful pictures on the screen showing the food items that can be ordered. There was a large selection of breakfast sandwiches, as well as drinks and other items. I sat there, looking at the pictures and debated whether to get the hotcakes with maple syrup or the sausage, egg and cheese on a biscuit. I was only able to see the pictures and unable to read the prices. I finally decided on the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. It came with a drink and hash browns too. When I pulled up to the window, the lady told me the total price of the order.
             She said "five dollars and thirty cents please sir." I pulled out a bill from my pocket which my mother gave me for gas to fill up her car. I looked at her and she looked at me.
