Bulky Biceps or Just a Potential Death Risk
Gabe Mackin once asked 100 athletes, "Would they take a special pill that would guarantee a gold medal in the Olympics, but it would kill them within a year?" Out of the 100 athletes, more than half of them said yes (Steroids . . . Attitude). Anabolic Steroids are a growing problem that has gone overlooked for several years, but now this bulky problem is being brought out into the open. Steroids are a derivative of male testosterone and have been in use since the early 1960's. Several acts and laws have been past trying to stop the vast usage of Anabolic Steroids. Such acts as the Federal Anti Drug Act of 1988 place Anabolic Steroids within a special category in the prescription class, and all violations involving the sale or possession with intent to distribute Anabolic Steroids became a felony. The Anabolic Steroid control act of 1990 gave enforcement power to DEA which created harsher punishments for the people to that continue to use. Despite supposive reductions in recent years, Anabolic Steroid use is still greatest among the youth of America, than among the youth in any other industrial nation. Twenty percent of kids ranging from ages twelve to seventeen have admitted to taking drugs (Blaken). Steroid
Abuse is often said to have started in high school. Sometimes ten or more times stronger than the normal pharmaceutical dosage (Krieger and Ostrov). Now athletes are turning into "human guinea pigs in a vast uncontrolled experiment, self-medicating with steroids, growth hormones, erychropocetic stimulants, and anything else that might give them the competitive edge (Kriegier and Ostrov). The dosages that users take are just guesswork. Women go through such problems as breast diminution, clitoral enlargement, body hair growth, deepening voice, baldness, liver tumors, and heart diseases. About one million young people between twelve and seventeen, just in the United States are suspected to be taking performance enhancing supplements or drugs of some sort (Kreiger and Ostrov). The effects that steroids have on women are much more graphic. Anabolic Steroids are not physically addicting as many think. Also one third reported uncharacteristic episodes of aggress to such an extent that their jobs and social lives suffered (Health and Human Services). After the subject starts to use steroids he or she develops a mental dependency due to the success and the way their physique has improved. Males go through troubles such as prostate enlargement, testicular shrinkage, breast enlargement, and impotency. In a recent study of 41 athletes, one third showed symptoms, characteristics of psychosis, mania, or major depression. In the 1993 male bodybuilding competition, the winner died backstage due to a heart failure caused by his excessive steroid use (Gilmor). The other types are to make the original work more productive but also more deadly. Users do have reasons for taking Anabolic Steroids.
