A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur

             Throughout history, people's morals and beliefs have been influenced by the society in which they live. This is especially evident in the medieval time of history. Their government policies and the views of their closest circle of friends usually have a big impact on the decisions the citizens' made. At times, this can create problems in a simple, care-free society, since many people can not read or write. This can blur one's opinion on certain subjects because people must learn things with the help of others. They do not get to hear many sides of a story - they only get to hear one, and this can often lead to a uniform thought process for an entire community. This is definitely a major problem in the novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, by Mark Twain. This novel takes place in the medieval period during the 6th century, in King Arthur's England. As with all things in life, there are positive and negative aspects about living during this time. In the novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, the society of King Arthur's England has more negative aspects than positive, and this leads to an overall poor quality of life for the people of this time. Mark Twain clearly portrays this through the strength of the organized Church, the citizens never-ending belief in magic, and the social inequality that exists within the society.
             The powerful Catholic Church in King Arthur's 6th century England is very manipulative and plays a big role in the citizens' poor quality of life.
