Media Violence

             For many generations television has been around for a source of entertainment and news. Meanwhile television also has been creating different attitudes over the years due to the images it exposes the public to. Many things, some good and some bad, come from television, but one thing that is evident about television is that violence is exploited all over it. From movies to the nighttime news there are many acts of violence shown, and are seen by the public eye. Everyday there are people being killed, is the media violence America's youth sees on television influencing the way they are thinking and acting?
             At the ages of three, four, and five children begin to watch television and try to understand what they see. Most children love to watch cartoons, but should parents allow them to watch an unlimited amount of them? Parents think that cartoons are harmless, and do not realize that cartoons contain numerous amounts of violence. "In monitoring more than 350 children's cartoon episodes between 1990 and 1991, the National Coalition on Television Violence found that 72 percent of them contained more than ten acts of violence per hour" (Medved 247). Cartoons are not always good for your children to watch due to the fact that they are not educational and show violence. Shows such as Sesame Street, Barney and Friends, and Mister Rodger's Neighbor hood are the more educational shows children ages three to five should watch. "Barney and Friends has been shown to improve children's manners as well as their vocabulary. Mister Rodgers' Neighborhood has been used in many studies and has been shown to enhance a wide range of pro social behaviors as well as encouraging curiosity, happiness, and playfulness in young children" (Levine 111).
             Movies that children are watching at this age are also not in their best interest. Some movies contain violence while others are just give children the idea that ever...
