Hip hop
Hip hop is rapidly becoming one of the most listened to styles of music in the U.S., and everywhere else in the world. Hip hop is a flowing, often rhyming style of music in which bass, treble, and lyrics combine to create a unique sound that people want to listen to and of course can dance to. Hip hop's home is undisputedly Harlem N.Y., which has been a breeding ground for hip hop artists every since rap was brought to the mainstream in the 70s. Africa Bambaataa, an early founder of the hip hop movement had this to say when posed the question: what is hip hop? "Hip Hop means the whole culture of the movement.. when you talk about rap..Rap is part of the hip hop culture.. The MC-ing.. The dj-ing is part of the hip hop culture. The dress, the language, it's all part of the hip hop culture. The break dancing the b-boys, b-girls ..how you act, walk, look, talk are all part of hip hop culture.. and the music is colorless.. Hip Hop music is made from Black, brown, yellow, red, white.. whatever music that gives you the grunt.. that funk.. that groove or that beat.. It's all part of hip hop...." There is no clear definition of what constitutes underground. Freestyle is a much more grass roots form of rapping that focuses entirely on impromptu rhymes. Underground is often critical of its more commercialized brethren, but with good reason, they just don't deliver the goods. This is why underground is so refreshing, artists aren't trying to sell themselves, they are displaying gifts and making music about what they think, not what everyone else wants to hear. Their music is modest, often poking fun at themselves for being "broke", but despite the lack of funds, their music talks to the listener and touches on so many things instead of focusing on "everybody in the club getting tipsy". In the purest examples, they use their voice to speak up for the silenced masses that can't make people listen to them. He is a prime example of underground. In the rap arena, everyone thinks they are top dog. Of course some of it is strictly for entertainment value, but there is a lot of content to his music. Rappers are usually motivated by the same basic need to expose whatever injustices they felt growing up, and possibly still feel. Songs don't all have the same repetitive message of: get real drunk, be "hardcore" and start lots of fights, smoke lots of weed, that's what we do and we are rich! A large percentage of rappers preoccupy themselves with trying to create and maintain an image, portraying themselves as a cold, hard thug, all for the sake of record sales and to hold domain over the easily influenced minds of many teens and young adults. Sadly, drugs play a huge role in almost any type of hip hop.
