The gold rush in California was forced into play by one man's discovery. His name was James Marshall. He said, "I reached my hand down and picked it up; it made my heart thump, for I was certain it was gold. It was about half the size of a pea. Then I saw another." James Marshall and other workers kept finding small pieces of gold. But they thought it was too good to be true. They thought it must be fools gold! One day, still in disbelief, Marshall took his tiny pieces of what looked like gold to Sutter's fort. With a lack of technology and information, they decided it was gold; their only resource was a tattered old encyclopedia. But, they did not want the hassles of a gold rush to get in the way.              The stories of Marshal finding gold didn't start the gold rush. Just like Marshall, most of the people like was too, moisture. It wasn't the first tale of gold they had to hear. One man saw potential in the gold rush. Sam Bannan gave the gold rush a kick start after buying just about every pick and shovel he could find, and he ran around shouting that he found gold. People went crazy when they heard this; everyone wanted gold. Now everyone wished to pick and shovels. Sam bought all the choices and shovels for cents a piece and sold them for 15$ per piece. In just nine weeks, he made thirty-six thousand dollars. He never mined an amount of gold, but he got a lot more money than most of the gold miners, and all he did was sell picks and shovels.
             Gold can be found all over the world. California was trendy because you could find gold with just a few tools.
